The Global Technical Workforce
In the Global Technical Workforce Seminar, we heard lectures from experts and discussed about cultural issues, communication, teamwork, and collaboration tools in a global scale. We also participated in a 10 day study abroad trip to Munich, Germany. During our visit, we visited and interacted with many companies and universities such as GE Research, BMW, and Technical University of Munich. Furthermore, we also got the amazing opportunity to travel to Kufstein, Austria during our trip to hike the Alps, which was beyond beautiful.
The part I enjoyed the most was immersing myself into an entirely new culture while learning and observing the German culture. Surprisingly, German culture was very similar to Singaporean culture, which I am very familiar of since I have lived there for 13 years. Germans put work before relationships, separate their work lives from their personal lives, prioritise a balance of life, would rather be direct and honest than be unclear, find punctuality very important, have more of a long-term mindset, are very precise and efficient, value tradition, are more factual and logical than emotional, and are very conservative. German culture is actually very different from American culture, even almost opposite. It was very fascinating for me to compare the similarities between German culture and Singaporean culture, as well as the differences between German Culture and American Culture.
